Getting ready for your photoshoot!

Posted in: Portraits

WOOHOO!!!  You booked your photoshoot, now what?!

Whether you scheduled a photoshoot for a lifestyle , family, maternity or engagement session, those captured moments are priceless memories that you will cherish for years to come. What’s more, is the fact that other people who see these photos will be given a glimpse into the moments and person(s) in your life that matter to you. You may recall the saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words”.  These photos will capture the essence of who you are and will allow you to leave your footprint behind for generations to come. Photoshoots are kind of a big deal!

As your photographer, I know that the photoshoot can be both exciting and overwhelming. It’s my job to help you feel comfortable and confident throughout the entire process. Booking with me is just one step in the process of having a successful photoshoot, but what about all the pressing questions that flood through your mind after booking; What will I wear? Should I get my makeup done or do it myself? What about my hair and nails? Should I practice how to pose in the mirror, or will the photographer direct me? Where should the shoot take place? What time should I arrive?  Should I bring an extra outfit? And the list goes on…

Whether it’s your first time ever booking with a photographer, or you’ve done a few photoshoots, I listed out a couple of the things you need in order to get ready for your photoshoot, so you are 100% prepared and ready to take amazing images.

  1. Have a consultation with your photographer

The consult portion is a crucial part to the photoshoot process, because it’s an opportunity for you to share your vision with your Photographer, cover the basics, discuss certain expectations and go over the logistics of the day. The focus of the consultation is to help you to prepare and feel at ease with the remainder of the process as you know what to expect.

Before booking your photoshoot, consider your vision, theme, or ideas. Your ‘why’ will make your photoshoot unique and special to you as well as help to establish a blueprint the day of the shoot. Your reason for the photoshoot is what sets it apart from a regular phone snap image. Don’t forget about your ‘what’, because it’s equally as important as your ‘why’. Knowing what the photoshoot is for (solo portrait for business/personal/blog, family portrait for Christmas cards or engagements to showcase your love) sets the tone and allows your photographer to prepare for the big day.

Once you know your ‘why’ and ‘what’, and have placed your booking, expect a consultation call either through phone call or video chat.  At MissGee Photography we enjoy the opportunity of connecting with you to help you navigate the different components of the day. Not only is it an opportunity for me to get to know my clients and vice versa, but I love to help you brainstorm ideas about location, theme, and solidify the date, time, package, and payment options. I also have a list of recommendations for make-up artists, stylists, videography, venues, and studios that I share with my clients.

All these factors are important to note and discuss with your photographer during the consultation so you both are on the same page. It’s best to finalize all the details at least a week or two in advance. The date, time, location, setting, theme and all the other components that come with the photoshoot. At MissGee photography we always like to speak to our clients ahead of time to get an idea of what you want and how we can execute your vision!

  1. Hire a Make-up Artist and hairstylist/ barber!

You did the hard work of booking and planning out the details of your shoot with your photographer, now this part is all about you! Every now and then we all need some self-care and what better excuse to set aside time and be pampered than for your photoshoot.    Having your makeup and hair done professionally before your photoshoot makes all the difference in the quality and look of your images. We all want to look and feel our best in front of the camera. The different lighting and camera can wash out your natural skin tone. Applying make-up can help accentuate your natural features. If you’re not familiar with applying make-up, having a make-up artist could potentially help you achieve the look you want and use certain techniques that will allow you to look your best on camera.

The same goes for hair, if you plan to get your hair done the day before, just make sure you’re able to secure that appointment so you can look and feel amazing on the day of your photoshoot. For my fellas, that means making that barber appointment, don’t wait until the last minute. I know it may seem like a lot to coordinate but once you have a set date for your photoshoot, follow up with an MUA (Make-Up Artist) and a hairstylist to book them for the date and time you need. If you have no clue how to look for these vendors follow up with your photographer to see if they have a list of vendors you can contact.

  1. The outfit is everything!

What to wear? It’s all about your personality, theme, and vision.  What you wear makes all the difference in your photoshoot! You know the saying, “if you look good, you’ll feel good”. Having the right outfit that compliments your body and makes you feel like your best self will certainly make all the difference in the quality of the images. I would also recommend bringing a backup outfit just in case. That also goes for the accessories. Hiring a stylist will be an added bonus because they can make sure you look great from head to toe.

  1. Lastly, have fun!

The most important thing about your photoshoot experience is to enjoy the moment. Do you have a favorite song? Ask your photographer if you can play it during your session. Use this time to have a great experience capturing beautiful moments that will last a lifetime.

If you are looking for a photographer who will care about your vision, help you through the booking process and have an enjoyable experience during your photoshoot, MissGee Photographer is here to serve you!
